Matthias Gateway - Prague Castle, First Courtyard
Prague Castle, First Courtyard
Early Baroque gateway was built during the reign of Matthias I In 1614 based on a plan by G. M. Filippi. It used to be free standing and was conceived as an arch of triumph, it was not until 1763-71 that it became incorporated into the buildings of the court d´honneur (plan by N. Pacassi). It is one of the oldest secular Baroque monuments in the Czech countries. Pacassi´s staircase leads from the right side to the reception rooms; these include the Throne Hall, Brožík´s Hall, Mirror Hall, Music and Social Halls. Left from the gate starts a column hall with Rothmayer Hall leading to the big halls of the North wing.
