Saint Michael (archangel Michael)

In the Book of Revelation, part of the New Testament, the archangel Michael appears at the head of an army of angels who fight a dragon (Satan) and his army; the dragon and its messengers were smitten and cast down to earth. In the West, St. Michael is worshipped as the leader of the heavenly knights and the protector of Christianity, especially Christian soldiers, while in the East he is the patron of the sick. His cult dates back to the dawn of Christianity and he was also revered by Jews. He is generally portrayed as a knight in combat with a dragon, or weighing souls in scenes depicting the Last Judgement.
