Max Josef

*1804 (Janov by Sloup in Bohemia), †1855 (Prague)

Czech sculptor of German origin, member of a family of wood-carvers and sculptors, brother of E.Max. Typical representative of academism of the 19th century. He studied at Prague academy and then he founded a successful sculpture atelier in Prague. Besides two works for the Charles Bridge, he created a lot of church sculptures, tombstones, a sculpture of a Student in the Clementinum courtyard (1863), 25 allegories of Czech districts on the monument of Emperor Franz I (Smetana´s embankment in Prague) or sculpture of Charles IV in Karlsbad.
